The new standards are set out quite differently from what we currently know. They are now articulated in three ways:
A STATEMENT OF OUTCOME FOR THE CONSUMER
These are ‘I’ statements from the consumers perspective.
For example, Standard 1: Consumer Dignity and Choice states ‘I am treated with dignity and respect, and can maintain my identity. I can make informed choices about my care and services, and live the life I choose.”
STATEMENT OF EXPECTATION FOR THE ORGANISATION
For example, Standard 1: Consumer Dignity and choice- The organisation:
ORGANISATIONAL REQUIREMENTS DEMONSTRATE THAT THE STANDARDS HAVE BEEN MET
The requirements are now labelled according to the legislation by letters eg. 1a instead of 1.1.
Note that while the new standards refer to ‘consumers’ Regis will continue to refer to people living in residential care as ‘residents’ and those receiving home care or day therapy as ‘clients’.
